The event “Our hope for Europe: Conference on the Future of Europe” took place on 7th December 2021 at the Chapel for Europe in Brussels, Belgium. It is part of the curches’ contribution to the ongoing Conference on the Future of Europe.
What is the Conference about? The Conference on the Future of Europe is a citizen-led series of debates and discussions that will enable people from across Europe to share their ideas and help shape our common future. The Conference is the first of its kind: as a major pan-European democratic exercise, with citizen-led debates enabling people from across Europe to share their ideas and help shape our common future. This is done via an innovative Multilingual Digital Platform where any European can share ideas, and both national and European Citizens’ Panels. These contributions feed into the Conference Plenaries. The Conference offers a new public forum for an open, inclusive, and transparent debate with citizens around a number of key priorities and challenges.
The event of 7th December was jointly organised by the Conference of European Churches, the Comece – the Catholic Church in the EU and Chapel for Europe.
Featured speakers included: Dubravka Suica (European Commission’s Vice President for Democracy and Demography), Gašper Dovžan (State Secretary at the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and MEP Helmut Scholz (Member of the European Parliament from Germany).
European Christian citizens also shared their reflections on the theme “What is my hope for Europe?” representing diverse age groups and geographical regions of Europe. Among the contributors: Mary Killoran from Ireland, Bishop Robert Innes from the Church of England, Renato Cursi, Executive Secretary of Don Bosco International (DBI) and Very Rev. Archimandrite Aimilianos Bogiannou, moderator of the Committee of the Representatives of the Orthodox Churches to the EU (CROCEU).
