LATIN AMERICA: CHANGE OF POLITICAL ERA AND SYNERGIES WITH EUROPE

2016-11-08 13:00 - 2016-11-08 15:00

At the beginning of the 21st century, Latin America experienced an economic boom mainly driven by high commodity prices. Benefitting from this positive economic situation, governments came into power that had large public support, but have over the years increasingly been suspected of cronyism. Since 2015, various developments and events seem to announce the end of this political era in the region.

The close political, economic and cultural connection between Europe and Latin America results in common interests and challenges. Topics like regional integration and migration, the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, the challenges of climate change, as well as globalization concern the agendas of both continents. An exchange of experience between political actors and think tanks, and the creation of thematic networks will allow a synergy of initiatives and the development of joint proposals, which can constitute further input for an enhanced political dialogue between both continents.

This Round Table debate will present perspectives of Latin American think tanks and European policy makers on current developments on the continent and on synergies of engagement with Europe.
